Self-driving cars, watches that measure your pulse, homes that learn how you live, towns and cities that respond automatically to their citizens’ input…

We’re already living in the early days of the “internet of things” (IoT) - a world where every solid object is also a transmitter and/or receiver of data. But in the next few decades, that vision will become ever more powerful - and pervasive.

Amazing possibilities, and also some troubling issues, are already arising. How do we get ready to make the best of this next level of connectivity in our societies? And what role can local governments and their citizens, in areas like Cambridge, play in shaping this?

Lead by the ex-UK government advisor on IoT, Tony Howells, “Playing With The Future of The Internet of Things” is a morning conference and workshop, on 13th February 2016, in the Guildhall, Cambridge. It’s part of that day’s wider “Play of Light” conference, hosted by e-Luminate Cambridge’s light festival.

Mixing speakers with a futures workshop, the event will take you through the current and coming state of play with the internet of things, and then ask you to imagine how it might affect your council, area or business in 2030.

The emphasis will be less Blade Runner - more bus run. How will the IoT revolution address everyday issues in places like Cambridge? As Tony Howells says: ”It’s ok to speculate what IoT might be - however anything we deploy should bring the services people want locally at a price they can afford.”

Whether you work in public services, or you're a member of the public yourself, or you’re interested as a technologist or engineer - come along on 13th Feb, and get yourself ready for the future of the internet of things!
