Conductor Martyn Brabbins
Trumpet Lucienne Renaudin Vary*

Debussy Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
Haydn Trumpet Concerto
Shostakovich Symphony No. 5

Debussy’s languid, dreamlike Prélude à l'Après-midi d'un faune opens this final concert of the series.

Lucienne is an exciting young talent in the world of classical music, who is due to release her debut album with Warner Classics in autumn 2017. Next season will see her tour extensivley, including dates with Munich Symonhny Orcehstra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Les Violons du Roy and Lucerne Symphony Orchestra.

Filled with wonderful melodies and stirring rhythms, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 pulses with irresistible energy. Written under Joseph Stalin’s stifling Soviet regime, the composer subtly crafted a blend of satire and submission that intrigues audiences to this day.

*Please note: Lucienne Renaudin Vary replaces Alison Balsom as the soloist for this concert, tickets already purchased are still valid.  For further information please contact tickets@cambridgelivetrust.co.uk

A message from Alison Balsom:
'It's with a heavy heart that I cannot come and perform in Cambridge next month.  Performing a concerto with the wonderful Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Corn Exchange was to be one of the highlights of my season so it's such a shame that it is no longer possible for me.
It has been a true honour to be the venue's Artist in Residence this season, and I have very special memories from my concerts there over the past year.  It has therefore been an incredibly difficult decision to make, but as an expectant mother, I must take the advice of my doctors and rest at home for the remainder of my pregnancy.

Thank you all for your understanding and support at this time.'

Ahead of her appearence Lucienne said:

“I’m extremely honoured and so excited to be performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins. The Cambridge Corn Exchange has seen some of the best musicians on its stage and I feel humbled to be part of this amazing concert with such incredible musicians!”

Did you know?

Failure to please the authorities with his Symphony No. 5 would most likely have led to Shostakovich’s ‘disappearance’.  No pressure then!
