Cambridge Folk Festival
presents
CITY ROOTS

Renowned the world over and a sell-out every year, Cambridge Folk Festival is the summer highlight for folk fans and artists alike. With an exceptional musical pedigree reaching back to the 1960s and folk’s original heyday, the festival’s heritage is unique, as is its reputation for launching the careers of many of today’s major artists. This February sees the launch of City Roots, a brand new, week-long winter music festival and offspring of Cambridge Folk Festival. Creating the very same spirit as its summer counterpart, City Roots promises to be a musical tonic for the winter gloom, with venues across the city hosting a dazzling array of artists including:

Transatlantic Sessions
First seen in the unique format of award-winning Pelicula/BBC 4 TV series, when folk musicians came together in 'the greatest backporch shows ever', today’s finest Celtic and Americana musicians revisit shared roots and forge new common ground. Fresh from sell-out tour success, fiddle maestro Aly Bain and dobro legend Jerry Douglas direct proceedings, bringing together the ultimate house band who will accompany some very special guests!

Salif Keita
The ‘golden voice of Africa’ and closing headliner for City Roots, Salif Keita has been at the forefront of modern Malian music for many years. Keita has extended musical frontiers and carved out a distinctive musical voice, in which rock, funk and jazz combine with the deepest West African griot traditions.

‘The best thing about him was his voice. A grainy and searing tenor, its power continues to drop jaws, and cause goosebumps.’
**** Evening Standard

Cambridge Junction will be presenting four gigs as part of City Roots: Jim Moray, Paolo Angelli and Derek Gripper, Amy Wadge and Luke Jackson, and Mad Dog McRea. Portland Arms will showcase the home-grown talent of Cambridge-based singer songwriter Steven James Adams, performing with his new band.
