Jay Richardson- Iaulan
A new co-commission from Cambridge Live and Cambridgeshire Music.
Esther Yoo, with the Philharmonia Orchestra strings and twenty advanced young string players from Cambridgeshire, will give the premiere performance of Iaulan by Cambridge-based young composer Jay Richardson.
This commission and presentation is the latest product of an on-going partnership between Cambridge Live, Cambridgeshire Music and Aldeburgh Young Musicians.

Jay Richardson has been fascinated by music from an early age and began his musical studies with piano and singing lessons in his home country of Canada, where he was born in 1997. After moving to England in 2004 he was deeply inspired by his experiences as a chorister at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he sang regular services and performed extensively; since leaving he has continued to sing, including in operas by Britten, Mozart and Menotti, and has continued his piano studies under Ruth McIntyre.
He studied piano with Shelagh Sutherland and composition with Jeffery Wilson at the Junior Guildhall School of Music & Drama from 2011 to 2014, and as an Aldeburgh Young Musician from 2010 to 2015 he worked with leading professional artists in such fields as electroacoustic music, Indian classical music, jazz and classical improvisation.
Jay’s work has been performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, and has been commissioned by Aldeburgh Music and broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. He was awarded the Environ Music Composition Prize in 2014. Jay currently reads Music as a first year undergraduate at Pembroke College, Cambridge.
