50th Cambridge Folk Festival compilation album

Wednesday 7 January 2015
In 1960 a documentary called Jazz on a Summer’s Day was made covering the Newport Jazz Festival which had begun just six years previously in Rhode Island. It featured performances from many of the era’s Jazz greats including Jimmy Giuffre, Thelonious Monk, Dinah Washington, Chuck Berry, Louis Armstrong, and Jack Teagarden and was watched, some 3000 miles away, by fire-fighter and Cambridge Folk Club regular Ken Woollard.

He believed a similar event for Folk music should be held in the UK. When Cambridge City Council approached him in 1964 to help put on an event he set about making a family friendly folk festival – one that would demonstrate the vast breadth of sound existing under the umbrella term ‘Folk’ and one that would preserve the values of the intimate folk club movement whilst still providing big name acts.

That same ideal and spirit lives on 50 years later. The first festival, headlined by a young Paul Simon, was attended by one thousand four hundred people.

Since then it has grown into one of the most celebrated and respected festivals in the world.

This year’s Cambridge Folk Festival, starting on Friday 1st August, sees one of the strongest line ups yet, with the likes of Van Morrison, Sinead O’Connor, Richard Thompson, Loudon Wainwright III, Seth Lakeman and Ladysmith Black Mambazo all performing at the Cherry Hinton Hall site.

In honour of the 50th anniversary in 2014, 50 of the very best live tracks recorded at the event were carefully selected to feature on a compilation release. ‘Cambridge Folk Festival: Celebrating 50 Years’ is an extraordinary collection of performances from some of the biggest and best artists to have graced the site’s various stages featuring the likes of Richard Thompson, Seth Lakeman, KT Tunstall, Loudon Wainwright III, Billy Bragg, Joan Baez, Frank Turner, The John Butler Trio, Beth Orton, Taj Mahal, Fairport Convention, The Levellers, Rosanne Cash, Tommy Emmanuel and Martha Wainwright to name just a few.
