HAYDN – String Quartet Op.20 No.3 (‘Sun')
MOZART – String Quartet K.589
BEETHOVEN – String Quartet Op.132

Haydn’s Op 20 set was the group of quartets that presented him as one of the greatest composers: the string quartet came of age with these extraordinary pieces. Mozart learned so much from him and in turn inspired Haydn to new heights with his own quartets. K.589 is one of the ‘King of Prussia’ group with the cello in particular coming to the fore as a melodic instrument: the King played the cello and, judging by these pieces, must have been no slouch on the instrument! Beethoven’s great A minor late quartet includes one of his most original slow movements: a thanksgiving for his return to health after illness. The whole piece transcends all description and passes from dark introspection and questioning to unbridled joy.
