With a suitcase of awards behind her, she is the most widely read female writer in Turkey and her work has been translated into over 40 languages. She has written 10 novels and is an advocate for women's rights, LGBT rights and freedom of speech. Her second novel in English, The Bastard of Istanbul, was the best-selling book in Turkey in 2006. Her work looks at faith, friendship, tradition and modernity and it is as hopeful as she is politically sophisticated. Shafak shares her optimism and insight with translator Maureen Freely.
