And yet it is unerringly sad and moving, written in just three days while he was composing the score for a Soviet film about the ruin of Dresden.

A hundred years on from the end of World War One, all the works in this programme are responses to war and conflict, from the eerie sounds of George Crumb’s cult work, ‘Black Angels’, to the consoling lyricism of Dave Brubeck.
