Songs before Sleep
Sunday 8 July 2018, 7.30pm
The Old Divinity School, St John's College

Ashley Riches  bass-baritone

Joseph Middleton piano

Radio 3 New Generation Artist Ashley Riches is joined by pianist Joseph Middleton for this luscious recital of songs on a theme of night and visions, to include works by Schubert, Gounod, Duparc, Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Barber. The programme also features the world premiere of two pieces by composer Kate Whitley – settings of poems by Julia Copus, Love, like water and In defence of adultery – and finishes with Richard Rodney Bennett’s Songs before Sleep, using texts taken from the Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes.

Pianist Joseph Middleton specialises in the art of song accompaniment and has been described in Classical Music Magazine as ‘one of the most talented, intuitive, collaborative pianists of his generation’.

Ashley Riches studied at Cambridge University where he was a member of King's College Choir.  He went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and subsequently joined the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House.

Kate Whitley’s pieces have been co-commissioned by Cambridge Summer Music, the BBC and the Royal Philharmonic Society. This concert will be recorded by BBC Radio 3 and broadcast on 10 July at 7.30pm.
