Virginia Woolf: an exhibition inspired by her writings (2 October - 9 December 2018) draws attention to the many connections between Virginia Woolf, her contemporaries and those who share an affinity with her work.

In this exhibition, Woolf’s writing acts as a prism through which to explore feminist perspectives. Featuring works by modern masters Vanessa Bell, Barbara Hepworth, Gwen John, Winifred Nicholson and Laura Knight the exhibition also encompasses mystics and surrealists such as Dorothea Tanning and Agnes Martin, and the extraordinary work of contemporary artists. Gwen Raverat’s Mountain Scenery is an addition to the exhibition from the Museum’s collection.

In the centenary of suffrage, the exhibition draws on the suffragist movement and the developing canon of art by women, using Woolf’s writing as a lens. It was in Cambridge that Woolf delivered a series of lectures that went on to become the extended essay A Room of One’s Own. The original manuscript will be on display in the exhibition.

Friends are invited to a special evening where the exhibition’s curator Laura Smith, of The Whitechapel Gallery, will give a presentation on the exhibition. Friends will then be invited to enjoy exclusive access to the exhibition. The Courtyard Shop will be open throughout the evening.
