The land has belonged to Corpus Christi College since early in the nineteenth century. In 1878, one and a half acres was leased to Frederic Myers, a former classics fellow of Trinity who had become inspector of schools. He built the existing house, which has been little altered externally, in the style of an updated Cotswold manor but largely in brick because stone was so expensive in Cambridge. He named the house after the village of Leckhampton, which is close by Cheltenham Spa where he lived as a child.

Leckhampton House also has connections with the Fitzwilliam Museum. It was the home of our 6th Director, Louis Colville Gray Clarke (1937-1946). He hosted many distinguished guests at lunches and supper parties in the large Edwardian house including Queen Mary when she visited the Museum in January 1939.
