Although one may argue that renovations and improvement to housing is good in the long term, it also has profound negative  effects on current occupants (often working-class families) who suffer from increased rents and unaffordable living costs in the local area.  Usually this leads to pre-established familiar or ethnic groups being broken up and having to live elsewhere, moving further out from the city.
