Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor, Op.54
Mendelssohn Symphony no 4 in A Major, Op.90 (Italian)
The chamber orchestra Outcry Ensemble draws together outstanding young professionals at the start of major international careers as orchestral, chamber and solo instrumentalists. Tonight they join with acclaimed young virtuoso Ivana Gavrić to perform a firm audience favourite – Schumann’s joyful piano concerto, a work suffused with passionate love for his soon-to-be wife Clara. The programme continues with Mendelssohn’s ebullient ‘Italian’ Symphony, evoking the sights and sounds of Italy, a piece described by one writer as “a musical rendition of the Italian blue sky”.
Renowned for performing either a world premiere or a work by a living composer at every concert, Outcry opens this evening’s performance with the premiere of a new piece by Josephine Stephenson.
