The authors of two of the most highly praised historical novels of 2016, Sarah Perry and Francis Spufford are masters of plot and place. The Essex Serpent follows a widow on the trail of a mythical beast at the end of the nineteenth century, while Golden Hill is a twisting narrative of a mysterious young man reinventing himself in eighteenth century New York. They discuss their books with literary critic Alex Clark.
