Less well known is the interaction of nature and science in his work and thought. This study day on 11 March begins with a guided tour around the exhibition Whistler & Nature with the art historian who conceived the show, Dr Patricia de Montfort from Glasgow University, and Prof. Clare A.P. Willsdon (also Glasgow University), who contributed to the exhibition book. This will be followed by illustrated talks by Dr. de Montfort, Prof. Willsdon, Prof. Rosalind Polly Blakesley (Head of the Department of History of Art, University of Cambridge), Dr. Paul White (Editor and Research Associate, The Darwin Correspondence Project, University of Cambridge), Caroline Ikin (Garden historian), and Prof. Caroline Arscott (Courtauld Institute of Art, London).

The Study Day is chaired by Prof. David S. Ingram OBE, ScD, VMH, FRSE, former Regius Keeper (Director) of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, former Master of St Catharine’s College in Cambridge, and now Honorary Professor in the Universities of Edinburgh and Lancaster.

Plus, there will be a complementary visit to Cambridge University Botanic Garden the following morning, 12 March: join Prof. John Parker, FLS, VMH, the Garden’s former Director, and an Emeritus Fellow of Clare Hall, Cambridge, to explore the history of the Garden and its links with Charles Darwin's mentor, John Stevens Henslow. The visit is free to Study Day attendees, but please note that places are limited, on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in a place on the Garden visit, please email Prof. Clare A.P. Willsdon at Clare.Willsdon@glasgow.ac.uk
