Chinese culture was widely admired by seventeenth-century Europeans for its beauty and utility. Yet in the years that followed, its primary showcase contracted to the sphere of feminine bedrooms, dressing rooms and drawing rooms.
 
Emile de Bruijn, Collections and Grants Registrar for the National Trust and ‘NT Treasure Hunt’ blogger, will discuss how surviving Chinese wallpapers provide fascinating evidence of the gendered nature of exoticism.
