By day’s end, over 650 had been injured and 15 killed as panicked troops tried to disperse the crowd - the bloodiest clash in British political history. Jacqueline Riding, adviser on Mike Leigh’s epic film of the same name, argues that Perterloo’s shocking events 200 years ago were instrumental in the battle for UK political reform.
