Gomez beat heavy competition from Pulp’s ‘“This Is Hardcore’Hardcore”, The Verve‘s ‘“Urban Hymns’Hymns”, and Massive Attack‘s ‘“Mezzanine’ Mezzanine” to win the 1998 Mercury Music Prize
