Music’s position within the Church has long been a complicated one. Early thinkers embraced music’s power to elevate and illuminate sacred texts. Others, however, feared music’s abstraction and wordlessness, suspecting the seduction of melody could usurp the very texts it was meant to amplify.

But the root of this tension – music’s fundamentally ethereal, ephemeral nature – has also long appealed to composers keen to evoke the spiritual realm of angels, saints and the eternity of the after-life in their works.

AAM principal Bojan Cicic directs an astonishing programme of such music. From the ecstasy of Vejvanovsky’s exuberant “Paschalis” sonata to Biber’s emphatic, devotional “Guardian Angel” passacaglia, this is a programme sure to dazzle and inspire.
