Chineke! Orchestra burst onto the scene just two years ago and now delights audiences with its vibrant, energetic playing. The brainchild of double bass player and BBC presenter Chi-chi Nwanoku, Chineke! is Europe’s only professional orchestra of black and minority ethnic players.

 

The Orchestra’s concerts combine popular classics with the forgotten world of black musicians in Europe. One such musician is the extraordinary Joseph Bologne, known as the ‘black Mozart’. The son of a plantation owner and a slave, he was sent to Paris for his education and soon became renowned as a champion fencer, virtuoso violinist and composer who led the first performances of Haydn’s Paris Symphonies.

 

Bologne’s concerto is performed by American violinist Tai Murray – a former BBC New Generation Artist – alongside popular works by Mozart, Tchaikovsky and Belize-born Errolyn Wallen.
