The Endellion String Quartet is renowned as one of the finest quartets in the world. It was founded in January 1979 and three of the original players continue to be members. Ralph de Souza joined them thirty-two years ago in 1986. In 2013, Gramophone stated 'There’s always a feeling when listening to the Endellion Quartet that you’re listening to the Urtext method of quartet playing. Maybe 35 years of playing together has brought to them as a group a uniformity of thought and instinct that allows them to play as a single entity.'
The 2018-2019 season is the Endellion’s fortieth since their first rehearsal on 20 January 1979. They have been ‘Resident Quartet’ of Cambridge University for well over half of these years. This year’s programmes contain a mixture of some of the first pieces which the Endellions learned together with new pieces especially commissioned for their 40th Anniversary.
BEETHOVEN String Quartet in D major Op.18 No.3
DVORAK String Quartet in E major Op.80
TBC Quintet or Sextet with guest Cambridge University student musician(s)
Dvořák’s E major quartet is full of freshness and invention and Beethoven’s early Op. 18 No.3 quartet is one of his most good-humoured, warm and youthful. In this concert, the Endellions continue their long tradition of combining with a Cambridge University student or students in a quintet or sextet. Over the years we have been blessed with many outstanding players from the student body including several studying non-musical subjects as well as several who have now become distinguished professional players.
