From the beginning of the nineteenth century until the Russian Revolution, the Tsars exiled more than a million prisoners and their families east to ‘the vast prison without a roof’ in Siberia. The House of the Dead illuminates the brutal realities of this inhuman system, and examines its decisive influence on the political forces of the modern world.

Chaired by Bridget Kendall, festival patron, former BBC Moscow correspondent and Master of Peterhouse.
